Reliable software updates start with the question of whether a package truly comes from the expected vendor. Digital signatures and the corresponding public keys play a central role in this. When a key is replaced as a precaution, administrators must incorporate that change into their update process in a timely manner.
In May, GitHub announced a rotation of the signing key for GitHub Enterprise Server following an investigation into unauthorized access to internal repositories. For users of the self-hosted variant, action was required: future packages would be signed with a new key, causing older configurations to be unable to validate new updates.
The notice shows that key management is not a one-time setup. Certificates, signing keys, tokens, and other trust anchors have a lifecycle. An incident, an expired key, or a vendor change may call for rapid adjustment, even when your own systems have not been directly affected.
For development and operations organizations, it is wise to make key rotation something that can be rehearsed in advance. Document where keys are used, how changes are verified, and who is responsible for implementing them. That way, a necessary security measure does not become an unexpected disruption to the update process. Clear communication to the teams involved makes the difference between a maintenance action and an incident.
